Eagles players select QB Jalen Hurts as team captain, five others selected
The Philadelphia Eagles announced the team’s captains for the upcoming 2021 season. In a player-only voting system, those selected captains were QB Jalen Hurts, OC Jason Kelce, DE Brandon Graham, DT Fletcher Cox, OLB Alex Singleton, and FS Rodney McLeod.
Last year, HC Doug Pederson selected his team’s leaders. Those players were QB Carson Wentz, OC Jason Kelce, OT Jason Peters, DE Brandon Graham, DT Fletcher Cox, FS Rodney McLeod, and two special-teams aces; ST Duke Riley and ST Craig James.
"It's a little bit of a different approach this year," Pederson said shortly after informing the players at the daily team meeting. "It is important to me to select players who are great leaders, who are going to be captains all year. I felt like these gentlemen represented what we're looking for in the way they've worked so hard and led the way for the team on and off the field. It's a group I'm proud to call our captains for the season."
Two vastly different approaches.
Pederson leaned more toward a dictatorship while new head coach Nick Sirianni allowed free reign autonomy. Honestly, I always favored the latter more than the former.
The locker room dynamic should be led by the players. When I coached, I always kept an open-door policy but also allowed the players to make those tough decisions. After all, it’s their team. From player-only meetings to self-governance, the team captains should have the ability to govern their peers without fear of being micromanaged.
For what it’s worth, I believe Sirianni is doing things the right way. As we look forward to the 2021 season, I can’t wait to see how Sirianni does in Year 1 as the Eagles seem to be soaring in the right direction.
