Coach Shanahan on Richard Sherman: "It makes sense why he went to Tampa."
9/29/21 | News, Notes, and Quotes:
Coach Shanahan on not re-signing CB Richard Sherman:
“I think he needs a couple of weeks to get ready, like at least a week. And I mean there’s contract things that go into it also that play out everything. That’s about as much I’ll say about it but we would love to have Richard here. But it makes sense why he went to Tampa.”
Nothing new in the BWF as I pointed that out a while ago on Twitter below:

Coach Shanahan on signing CB Buster Skrine:
“He says he’s ready. I think he needs more time to learn our defense and stuff--he hopped in there today and did good in our walkthrough and we will keep him going throughout the week.”
Coach Shanahan was asked by Matt Barrows of the Athletic on possibly utilizing QB Trey Lance earlier in the game to ignite a sluggish offense:
“If we thought that would be the case, we’d do it!”
“There’s not a quarterback battle right now. I mean we’re going with our starting quarterback who I think is playing very well. Happy that he is-- so Trey is not thrown into any situations he has to do too early.”
Coach Shanahan on WR Deebo Samuel in Year 3:
“This year is what you were hoping to see in his second year. He came in very prepared from what he learned in his rookie year. Came in ready to go, was in much better football shape, much better in his routes, his stamina’s better and I think that’s why he started off better.”
Coach Shahanan on WR Davante Adams getting open on last drive:
"It was the coverage we wanted 2-man just wasn’t the technique we wanted. Everyone should be inside technique--bumping not allowing break routes and we didn’t get that on the outside.”
This comes down to fundamentals. Something I pointed out on Twitter as I tweeted the lack of knowing how to leverage your split pre-snap:

If CB Deommodore Lenoire doesn’t understand how to play with inside leverage--not giving the WR a free release off LOS while using the sideline as an extra defender--squeezing the WR to the boundary then what does that say about the rookie third-round pick (No. 102) CB Ambry Thomas who’s been a healthy scratch? How bad is he?
Coach Shanahan on DC DeMeco Ryans:
“I love working with DeMeco. He’s really smart. He’s strong-minded. He’s not a “yes-man” at all. He’s gonna listen to ya, he’s gonna tell you what he thinks and he’s never gonna stop working at it.”
Coach Shanahan was asked by Grant Cohn of SI why he “changed his mind” not using a dual QB system:
“I didn’t change my mind. We have put him on the field. We do it in situations, you can go with whatever you want, when I say in training camp and you can expand on that or not. But I think I was asked coming off the field in our third game if we’d see this in the regular season and I said “probably not.”
So I think a lot of words have been put in my mouth with some of that stuff or exaggerated pretty big! So I pretty much keep it real with everyone--I’ve been pretty consistent with what I said.”
Something I predicted right after Lance was drafted--I fully anticipated Lance to be the backup while being sprinkled in situational football. The only time he will gain starting reps is if Garoppolo becomes the scapegoat and Niners are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention or he gets hurt (whichever comes first).
We are seeing it now. Another BEAST receipt in the books. If you know, you know. ;)
QB Jimmy Garoppolo self-assessment on SNF performance:
“Pretty good. The turnovers obviously got to eliminate those.”
MLB Fred Warner on self-assessment on Packers last drive:
“Having a little bit more situational awareness. You know I look back at my play. I had the first play of that drive, I could’ve started further back in my positioning just so I’m closer to that route. If I’m five yards deeper to start--that’s a no play. I don’t even think he throws that ball and if he does I pick it.”
Nothing new in the BEASTwriter+ Newsletter as I pointed that out in my post-game analysis. Just another day at the office while checking off another BEASTwriter receipt with those game grades:
As the 49ers prep for the hated divisional rival Seattle Seahawks, it will be interesting to see how they bounce back in Week 4. A mentally draining, hard-fought loss can often be a blessing in disguise. How will that fare in Week 4? Time will tell.
