NFL Active PUP vs Reserve PUP: Everything you need to know
Active PUP vs Reserve PUP (Physically Unable to Perform)
What’s the difference between a player being placed on Active PUP versus a player being placed on Reserve PUP?
As NFL GMs maneuver their 53-man roster, the PUP is one term being tossed around, as the move clears up a roster spot. There are two PUP designations; "Active PUP" and "Reserve PUP." What's the difference between the two? I break that down below when talking roster manipulation.
I hope this helps. Please drop those comments below if you have any questions and or concerns on anything. Mahalo!
Active PUP
Football related injury prior to the start of training camp
Once a player takes practice field, he is unable to revert back to PUP
Reserve PUP
Football related injury prior to start of training camp
If still injured, player moves to Reserve PUP at start of the regular season
Player must forfeit the first 6 weeks of NFL season
Once 6 weeks expire, the team opens a 5-week window to decide on player practice participation
If the player starts to practice, the team opens a 21-day window to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster
If EITHER deadline passes, the player MUST remain on the PUP for the remainder of season
